Peter Jona Korn was born in Berlin in 1922. From a very early age onwards he displayed an extraordinary talent and versatility. In his oevre as a composer and, foremost under the influence of Ernst Toch, he developed a very personal and contemporary sound language which follows the classical-romantic tradition, though. Owing to his strong denial of doctrinarian avantgarde tendencies and his continued commitment to an extended tonality he was sometimes classified as a conservative. However, studying Korn’s music in more detail, the continued search for new and untrodden paths which reflects its creator’s biography shows itself clearly. Even though Korn might be considered a composer of orchestral music for the main part, he wrote a substantial number of pieces in the more “intimate” areas of song, chamber and piano music. While his symphonic music very often expresses an affirmation of his convictions, his chamber music, in particular, is ruled by a purely musical pulse. Formalistic issues in their context between historic tradition and challenges of contemporary developments call for solutions that Korn has always been able to find – in his very own language.
